Registration Questions

Do I need a Clubspot account to register for events?

No, you can go through the checkout process with or without a Clubspot account. If you have an existing Clubspot account you can use that, but there's no need to create an account.

Can I register multiple participants at once? Can I register for multiple classes at once?

Clubspot allows for registration in multiple classes at the same time, but only allows one participant to register at a time. Unfortunately you will have to go through the checkout process for each participant separately.

What is the difference between credit card payment and bank transfer (ACH)?

ACH bank transfers pay for programs directly from your bank account and incur no fee, while credit cards include a 3.3% fee.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?

We're so glad you asked! You can read all about it here.

What is your policy on cancellations due to weather or smoke / poor air quality?

Excellent question! You can read all about it here.

Do I have to be a CYC Member in order to register for CYC Community Sailing Center events?

No. CYC Community Sailing Center programs were previously a part of CYC Seattle, a 501(c)(7) non-profit yacht club which required participants to be members of the club. The CYC Community Sailing Center is now a separate 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means CYC membership is no longer required to participate in our programs.

That said, the Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle remains an affordable and valuable community to be a part of, and your membership indirectly supports our efforts. To learn more, visit https://cycseattle.org.

Scholarship Questions

What scholarships do you offer?

For households that are eligible, our scholarships can save you up to half (50%) of the cost of enrollment in any of our youth or adult sailing programs.

Do you offer reduced scholarships?

Yes. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for a 50% scholarship, we may still offer a smaller scholarship based on household size and annual income.

How do you determine scholarship eligibility?

We follow the  Scholarship Eligibility Income Guideline provided by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Additionally, households that are eligible to receive SNAP benefits are eligible for our scholarship program.

Other Questions

What should my sailor wear to summer sailing camp?

Sailors are outdoors for most of our summer camps. We rarely use the clubhouse, except for minimal activities and bathroom breaks. We recommend sending your child with layers and extra clothes appropriate for the weather that day. Sailors commonly wear swimsuits, UV shirts, and swim shorts. If rain is forecast, please ensure that your child has clothing that will keep them dry.

Close-toed shoes are required at camp, and any student not wearing appropriate footwear will not be allowed on the CYC docks until they have acquired the correct shoes. Aquasocks, tennis shoes, and keens are all great options.

My child is between two age ranges, which camp should I register them for?

Our age ranges overlap because we know kids come in a variety of sizes and maturity levels. No one knows which would fit better than their parent. Do you have a 12-year-old who acts old or is large for their age? If so then our teen sailing camp will probably be the better fit. Do you have a child who just turned 8 and whose best friend is 7 and they want to do a camp together? Then Guppies is the perfect camp for them. Feel free to give us a call if you have additional questions about what camp would be best for your child.

Will life jackets be provided?

Yes. We have US Coast Guard approved Type III life jackets (also called "PFDs" for "personal flotation devices") in all sizes. You are welcome to bring your own Coast Guard Approved Type III PFD, or use one of ours.

What should my sailor bring to summer camp?
  • Water bottle

  • Lunch

  • Change of clothes, swim gear, and towel for at least the first day (note: we have a mandatory swim check on the first day - sailors should be prepared to get wet!)

  • Sunscreen and sun protection (sunglasses, hat, UV shirt)

  • Close-toed shoes (they will NOT be allowed on the docks without them)

  • Rain jacket if the weather forecast is wet!

My child is not comfortable swimming without a life jacket. Can they still participate?

Yes! The swim check we conduct on the first day of each session is a check to make sure your child is comfortable in the water. We require your student to wear a life jacket at all times  while on the CYC docks. The check consists of them getting into the water and swimming/doggie paddling/ flutter kicking their way along the dock, about 20'.

If they are in the Guppies program, their swim check is done and they may hop on out. For all other programs, students must complete a capsize recovery (boat with the mast in the water instead of upright) so they are prepared to recover from a capsize if one should occur during the program.

Instructors and the sailing director will work with students who are nervous about this process, but we cannot and will not force your child into the water. Students who do not complete the swim/capsize check will not be allowed to sail. This must be completed at the beginning of every class they take.

Can I drop my child off early or pick them up late?

Please drop off and pick up your child within 10 minutes of the start and end of camp as there will be no one supervising students outside of those times. The time before and after class is your child’s instructor’s time to plan and prepare for the day, and clean up and debrief with the rest of the staff.

If you are delayed due to an emergency, please call 206-402-6870 and inform the program director of your delay. If we do not hear from you and you pick up your child more than 15 minutes after the scheduled end of class, a warning will be issued.

My child wants to have their cellphone with them. Is there a safe place for them to leave it?

We recommend your sailor does not bring any technology with them to class. Part of the summer sailing camp experience is full immersion in activities. If you need to contact your student during the day, please call our program director at 206-402-6870

Our docks, though they have a locked gate, are accessed by members of the boating community and the public regularly, and we cannot guarantee security. If your child must bring their cellphone and you are worried about theft, they may keep their device in the office for the duration of their class.

Where can I park when dropping off or picking up my camper?

Guest parking at Shilshole Bay Marina is available on the street side of the parking lot directly outside CYC, and to the North on both sides of CYC. Guest parking is outlined by white paint only, while permit parking has blue on it.

Occasionally, Shilshole Bay Marina will close off entrances along the marina to reduce the amount of spaces taken up by non-tenants and their guests, and you will have to enter at the Port of Seattle office where Jibe Cafe is located. This typically happens on Fridays, or in August as Golden Gardens gets busier.

What gear will my child need for the Teen Adventure overnight camping on Blake Island?

Your child will need basic camping gear such as a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, tent, etc. If you don't have access to these things just let us know and we'll find some folks who can share gear. We will bring cooking supplies and will work as a group to plan food. Plenty of snacks are always a good idea.
