Summer Camp Sick Policy

Jan 16, 2025
Stay Home if Sick

Campers showing any symptoms of illness, such as a cough, flu-like symptoms, or any respiratory virus, should stay home to prevent spreading illness to others.

Symptoms to Watch For
  1. Appearance/Behavior: Unusually tired, pale, lacking appetite, hard to wake, or confused.

  2. Eyes: Drainage, vision changes, redness of the eyelid, itching, pain, or sensitivity to light. These may indicate "pink eye" (conjunctivitis) and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.

  3. Fever: A temperature of 100°F (38°C) or higher. Campers must be fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications before returning to camp.

  4. Bad Cold and/or Cough: Campers need to be able to cover their cough. If a cough or cold persists for more than 2 weeks, a healthcare provider should evaluate the camper.

  5. Diarrhea: Two or more watery stools in 24 hours, especially if the camper looks or feels unwell. Campers should stay home for 24 hours after the last watery stool.

  6. Vomiting: Vomiting two or more times in 24 hours. Campers should stay home for 24 hours after the last vomiting episode.

  7. Rash: A bothersome body rash, especially with fever or itching. Some rashes may be contagious and should be checked by a healthcare provider.

  8. Injury/Surgery: If a camper is unable to concentrate due to pain or pain medication, they should stay home. Please inform the camp of any planned surgeries in advance.

Return to Camp

Campers may return to camp once they have been symptom-free for at least 24 hours without the use of medication.

For contagious illnesses like the flu or COVID-19, a doctor’s note may be required to confirm that the camper is no longer contagious.

If Symptoms Develop at Camp

If a camper begins to show symptoms of illness while at camp, they will be isolated, and parents/guardians will be contacted immediately for pickup.

It is essential that parents/guardians are reachable and can promptly pick up their child if they become ill at camp.

Participation

Campers are expected to participate in all camp activities, including sailing and physical exercises. If a doctor has restricted your child’s activities, please provide a doctor’s note specifying the restrictions.
